Income tax counseling offered to Seniors in Berkshire County
Free income tax counseling through the American Association of Retired Persons will be offered to Berkshire County senior citizens beginning Tues., February 1.
Harlan Williams, County Coordinator of Volunteers, has announced the schedule of the annual effort. The program is administered through the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service.
Volunteers trained by the IRS again will provide free counseling and tax return preparation for middle and low-income seniors aged 60 and older at senior centers in North Adams, Williamstown, Dalton, Pittsfield, Lenox, Lee and Great Barrington.
The service is designed to help older people understand income tax forms and become familiar with special benefits available to them. Participants are asked to bring copies of their federal and state 1998 tax returns as well as forms they received for the current year. All income reports are also necessary. Volunteers are trained to assist in filing basic personal income tax returns for Massachusetts residents only. People with complex tax returns will be advised to seek professional tax assistance.
Appointments are required and may be made by calling the appropriate towns senior center for days and times of volunteer availability.
Additional volunteers are needed for this services, particularly in North and South Berkshire County. Interested individuals are asked to call Harlan Williams, 442-7601.
