From the Director
Elder Independence Appeal - Making Ends Meet
by Catherine R. May, Executive Director
Each June, Elder Services, through its Elder Independence Appeal, provides community members who care about Berkshire elders the opportunity to contribute financially, supporting the fiscal demands of running programs and services that help local elders live with dignity and independence.
Elder Services has been serving area seniors since 1974, continually developing programs to address both constant and emerging elder needs. The donations received through this annual appeal help repair holes in the elder safety net; financial resources are directed to programs with inadequate funding serving increasing numbers of elders.
Enhanced Elder Intervention, a program Elder Services developed to work with self-neglecting elders at risk of losing their independence, but who do not fit into the very specific criteria for our publically funded programs, receives support from the Elder Independence Appeal in addition to funding from the United Ways, City of Pittsfield, and the Williamstown Community Chest.
The SHINE (Serving Health Insurance information Needs of Elders) program also greatly benefits from the proceeds of the annual appeal, which help cover the costs of providing health insurance counseling to all who seek help.
Money Management Assistance, offered countywide to elders who need help paying monthly bills, reconciling bank statements and developing a budget is also paid for through the annual appeal proceeds, again in combination with funding from the United Ways and Community Chest. Over the past year, the number of elders using this essential service has risen from 50 to over 80 per month, with no end in sight.
Elder Independence Appeal funds are also directed to other programs such as Meals on Wheels, which may need additional funds to serve all who request help.
Elder Services uses the monies raised through the Elder Independence Appeal to promptly help all those who need us; thanks to the community’s generosity, we have avoided waiting lists for these vital services.
If you have given to Elder Services in the past, you will receive a personalized Appeal letter in the mail. The envelope folded into this issue is for those of you who feel moved to give for the first time - we appreciate your generous support. The kindness and caring of our Elder Independence donors helps elders continue to live independently, with dignity and self-determination. Thank you for helping us help Berkshire elders.
