What is SHINE?

What is SHINE?

By Angela Fields, Supervisor of Volunteer Services

The SHINE Program provides free and unbiased health insurance information,

counseling and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. SHINE

counselors help older persons (and younger disabled Medicare beneficiaries) understand

their Medicare benefits and other health insurance options.

The SHINE Program ensures that Medicare beneficiaries have access to accurate

information regarding health care options. The SHINE Program is supported by the

Massachusetts Executive Office Of Elder Affairs in partnership with Elder Services of

Berkshire County and area Councils on Aging.

SHINE Counselors are community volunteers who are trained and certified by the

Executive Office of Elder Affairs in many areas of health benefits, including Medicare

A & B, prescription drug options, Medigap insurance, retiree insurance plans, Medicaid

and free or reduced cost health care programs.

You can meet a SHINE counselor by scheduling an appointment by calling the

Councils on Aging listed on the chart in this supplement or by calling Elder Services

at 800 544 5242 or 499 0524. SHINE counselors will also make home visits.

If you have any question regarding this program Elder Services’ SHINE

Coordinator is available to help you.
