Helen Vanasse, Community Service Volunteer of the Year
By Angela Fields, Volunteer Services Supervisor
For over six years, Helen Vanasse has been shopping for four of Berkshire County’s seniors who cannot shop for themselves. Her cheerful personality continues to brighten their days.
As a wife, mother and grandmother, she is also very devoted to her family. As a
retired nurse, caring for and helping others has been a significant part of her life. Before retiring, she was a nurse at North Adams Regional Hospital for about 30 years. Contact with her patients was always very important to her.
Vanasse and her husband Dick lived in Williamstown for 25 years where they raised their children. They now reside in Vermont.
Vanasse’s experiences volunteering include the American Cancer Society and the Literacy Program. When asked why she volunteers, she replied, "It makes me feel good when I am helping someone, and I enjoy these relationships and have become part of their families."
Varasse has met some personal challenges during the past year. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and treated with chemotherapy and radiation. During this time, she never missed a beat! She continued volunteering with her husband’s assistance, and those for whom she shops never knew she was sick. It is no wonder that some refer to her as "St. Helen." I am happy to report that Helen is now doing very well and also enjoys playing golf, bridge and bowling.
Congratulations, Helen, you truly have a heart of gold.
