Free income tax preparation assistance for seniors

AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will be providing free state and federal tax return preparation assistance for Berkshire seniors in several senior centers during February, March and April.  According to AARP District Representative Tanya Cushman, this free service is intended for low and middle income tax returns and is by appointment only at the following Councils on Aging:

Dalton - Tuesdays, 2 to 5 p.m. - 684-2000

Gt. Barrington - Alternate Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon - 528-1881

Lee - Alternate Thursdays, 9 a.m. to noon -  243-5545

Lenox - Alternate Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon -  637-5535

North Adams - Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to noon -  662-3125

Pittsfield - Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to noon - 499-9346

Williamstown - Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. - 458-8250.

Senior residents can contact the closest senior center to make an appointment.  Those who are seeking assistance are asked to bring a copy of last year’s return and a copy of real estate taxes and water/sewer charges paid in 2003 (for those who qualify for the Massachusetts “Circuit Breaker” tax credit.)

The Internal Revenue Service, located in the Federal Building on Center Street in Pittsfield, provides tax preparation assistance for the federal returns of those seniors who meet income guidelines.  Assistance is provided at no charge on Mondays and Tuesdays.  This office can be contacted at 499-1573 to schedule appointments.
