Tom Kelly Finalist : Jo Vincent

"Cheerfully waits at the doctor’s office. (I’m) not so patient."

"When I made a mistake on the time of an appointment - she changed her time. When the doctor asked me to go to the hospital, she took me."

These are just some of the comments made by those who nominated Jo Vincent this year for the Tom Kelly Excellence in Volunteering Award. Jo, the mother of three, the grandmother of two, and wife of Donald, nonetheless finds the time and energy to serve Berkshire elders by transporting them to appointments and doing some shopping for them.

"Always interested and willing to listen. I’ve developed a real friendship with Josephine."

"Everyone likes Jo and she is so kind to all."

"The sense that she’s not doing me a favor but that I’m doing her a favor by letting her help me.

Jo Vincent truly cares about those she serves and goes the extra mile to support them.

She is quiet spoken with a keen sense of humor. I enjoy our conversation and am always happy when she is my driver."

"She not only cares but shows a genuine interest in you and is a great conversationalist."

"Jo gives time to listen to me when I have a pleasant story to share. She never rushes me.

Those who nominated Jo this year highlighted how much her listening skills and her genuine interest in their well being mean to them. Jo once told her supervisor in the volunteer program that she keeps volunteering because of the times when people open up to her. It is at precisely those times that she can become friends with them. For Jo and those she serves, volunteering is truly a win - win situation.

Jo remains active in her church. Last year she was asked, "What in your life are you most grateful for?" Her response is worth repeating. "My faith. It’s what keeps me going. Volunteering is a part of expressing what I believe.
