Elder Services names Roger Suters
as Director of Community Services

As a member of Elder Services’ Senior Management Team, Roger Suters will oversee a variety of programs, the largest of which is nutrition. Working with Manager of Food Services Operations, David Gage, and Sandy Alfonso, Supervisor of Congregate Meal Sites and Meals on Wheels, Suters will have overall responsibility to provide nutritious, midday meals daily to more than 1,000 Berkshire elders.

In addition, Suters will be responsible for the federal Area Agency on Aging activities. Working with Lisa Udel, Supervisor of Agency Planning, Suters will oversee the development and implementation of the new four-year Area Agency Plan. Other responsibilities include oversight of the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council, distribution of federal funds through sub grants, the SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Program, and the Money Management Assistance Program.

Suters recently retired from IBM after 33 years where he provided innovative technology solutions to major public sector organizations nationwide. He worked closely with state and local government human services agencies as well as several leading colleges and universities. He was recently named Business Educator of the Year at an awards luncheon sponsored by the Education Alumni Group of the City College of New York. Suters has a B.S. from Drexel University and a Master of Business from Columbia University.

When asked why he chose to pursue a second career with Elder Services, he responded, "This was the easiest decision of my life. First, I finally feel like I’m home. Afer a career that involved much moving and traveling, I now can both live and work in the beautiful Berkshires. Second, my wife Paula has been a driver for the ‘world class" Elder Services’ Meals on Wheels program for the past four years. She has received tremendous satisfaction in providing such a needed service to many elders across South County, and is the most positive spokesperson of Elder Services I’ve ever known. Perhaps most important, inspired by those whom Tom Brokaw has described as "The Greatest Generation," I look forward to working with and serving those who have served us so well over the years."

Suters’ other responsibilities at Elder Services include managing the Long Term Care Ombudsman and the Senior Aide Employment Programs, both supervised by Dorinda Gamberdella, and the Volunteer Services Department supervised by Penny Carey. Working closely with Fiscal Director, Stephanie Talanian, Suters will provide funding and budgetary oversight for all programs mentioned above.
