By Jeanne B. Siegel, Planner

At Elder Services’29th Annual Meeting, on October 22, Barbara Kie was elected President by the Board of Directors. Out-going President Karen P. Reilly welcomed Kie and the other officers for Board year 2003-04, including Vice President Richard Matthews, Treasurer William Dudley, and Clerk Mary K. O’Brien.  Wishing them well in their Board leadership, President Kie stated, “I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute on a larger scale to an organization that does so much for Berkshire elders.”  Six departing members were appreciated for having volunteered their time and energy to Elder Service’s governing body: Mary Ellen Ausman, Barbara Bashevkin, Sully Garofano, Rhoda Kaminstein, Denise Marshall, and Claudia Wells.  New Board members who have begun a two year Board term were introduced.  They include Brian O’Grady of Williamstown, Georgette Mancuso of North Adams, Carole Siegel of Pittsfield, Jeanette Roosevelt of Washington and Aldo Pascucci of Lee.

At the Annual Meeting the following staff were honored with longevity awards.  For 15 years of service, Accountant/Network Manager Nicholas Kirchner, Case Manager Patricia Morrissey, and Meals on Wheels Driver Ugo Alessio; for 10 years of service, Case Manager/Residential Coordinator Nancy McCarthy, Meals on Wheels Drivers Wesley Sagendorph and Doris Wood, and Nutrition Clerk Rita Burns; and for five years of service, Receptionist/Home Care Clerk Marge Noble, Meals on Wheels Drivers Walter Gawron, Claire Bedard, and Henry Babcock, Protective Services Supervisor Susan Geary, and Enhanced Elder Intervention Specialist Kate Barber.

Keynote speaker, David Stevens, Executive Director of Massachusetts Councils on Aging (MCOA), addressed the topic “Elder Care at the Crossroads: Where do we go from here?”  Robert P. Dean, Executive Director of Elder Services, noted in his Annual Report that, “The events of the past 12 months have proven that when the elder voice is strong, it is heard. The elder voice is strongest when we who comprise the elder network recognize all that we have in common and advocate in a unified manner. Together, we can ensure that our common goals will become a reality.”
