How SHINE can help you
Q. What is SHINE and who administers the program?
A. The SHINE Program (Serving the Health Insurance Information Needs of Elders) is sponsored by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, and is administered by Elder Services. It consists of a network of volunteers who have been trained and certified to provide unbiased health insurance and benefit information to elders and disabled Medicare beneficiaries and their family members.
Q. If I feel I need a SHINE counselor, how can I contact one?
A. SHINE counselors meet with people in senior centers, Councils on Aging (COAs), and other community-based sites. If someone is unable to leave their residence, home visits can be arranged. For an appointment with a counselor, call Elder Services at 449-0524, 1-800-544-5242, or 1-800-AGE-INFO.
Q. Can I invite others to attend this meeting?
A. Yes, family members and interested parties can be present at your request.
Q. What sort of information is provided?
A. Frequently provided information includes:
• Information regarding Medicare coverage and supplemental insurance.
• Help in understanding one's current insurance coverage and what other options are available.
• Information on prescription drug programs and discounts.
• Criteria and requirements needed to apply for public benefits.
• Application and claim forms are provided as needed along with assistance in filing appeals. All information is held in strict confidence.
Q. When should I call a SHINE volunteer?
A. SHINE Counselors can help with any of the following concerns:
• Your current insurance coverage is not meeting your needs.
• You are retiring, turning 65 and eligible for Medicare.
• You are having problems understanding your Medicare Explanation of Benefits.
• You have large prescription drug bills.
