Horizon Fund honors caregivers

The Horizon Fund of the REACH Community Health Foundation honored caregivers from Northern Berkshire County at a recent reception at the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire. The first Elder Caregiver Award was announced, and the 10 nominees were introduced to the gathering of over 40 family, friends, and community members.

“Caregivers are the unsung heroes of our society,” said Beth Parker-O’Brien, a member of the Horizon Advisory Board. The award honors the hundreds of caregivers in the Northern Berkshire community who lovingly take care of family and/or friends, and seeks to heighten public awareness of the contributions of all unpaid caregivers.

Shirley Jean Lee of North Adams was named recipient of the first Elder Caregiver Award and was nominated by her husband, Howard S. Lee, for her compassion in caring for family and friends in her life.

The nominees for the Horizon Elder Caregiver Award honor were Bet Azar, Isabelle Grillone, and Veronica Sobon of Adams; Judy Bombardier, Esther Herrick, and Phyllis Stone of Williamstown; Regina Miner of Savoy and Shirley Jean Lee, Hellen Luscia, and Mable Rogowski of North Adams.

Horizon is a fund of the REACH Community Health Foundation. Horizon provides resources and information to caregivers of elders. Horizon also founded and maintains the The Caregiver Lending Library (currently at the David and Joyce Milne Library in Williamstown), publishes quarterly reading/video lists for caregivers, organizes video nights, and has provided Caregiver education programs to enhance giving and receiving care.
