Gene Shalit to host Alzheimer’s at Tanglewood August 3

Gene Shalit, one of the most influential film critics in America and a leading interviewer of top international stars, will be the Honorary Chairman of the 4th Annual Alzheimer’s at Tanglewood event on Tuesday, August 3. Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association Massachusetts Chapter, the event is part of the special daylong celebration of Tangle-wood on Parade. Shalit, a frequent contributor to the NBC "Today" show, has interviewed such notables as Sophia Loren, Paul Newman, Harrison Ford and Meryl Streep. Known for his sharp wit and distinctive mustache, Shalit is also author of several popular books on humor as well as an authority on music.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with an hors d’oeuvre reception under the Hawthorne Tent on the Tanglewood grounds. New this year is a Travel, Art & Entertainment Silent Auction. The auction will feature tropical vacations to St. Croix and to Naples, Florida; weekend getaways in Boston, Lake Champlain and the Berkshires; stained glass and ceramic artworks; original sculpture; dinner-and-theater packages; and much more. Items may be viewed at www.alzmassT4.org. The Tanglewood grounds are open at 2 p.m. with all-day entertainment.

Reserved seating in The Shed is available for the 8:30 p.m. concert by the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood

Music Center Orchestras. Conductors are John Williams, Keith Lockhart, and Christopher Dohnanyi. A spectacular fireworks display follows the concert. Convenient parking close to the Tanglewood gate has been reserved for Alzheimer’s at Tanglewood guests.

Since 2000, Alzheimer’s at Tanglewood has raised almost $100,000 to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Money raised goes for research and to support services for Massachusetts families coping with this progressive, degenerative brain disease which causes loss of memory, language skills and judgment. It is estimated that one in 10 people over the age of 65, and nearly half over 85, have Alzheimer’s.

Co-chairs of the planning committee are Pamela Burger, Admissions Coordinator of Wil-liamstown and North Adams Commons, and Karen Gold, a nurse and former family caregiver.

Early ticket reservations are encouraged as this event sold-out last year. Information for tickets, reserving blocks of seating, sponsorship packages, or program advertising is available through the Western Region Office of the Massachusetts Chapter by calling 413-787-1113 or by emailing: kathryn.hedgepeth@alz.org.
