September 21, 2007 is World Alzheimer’s Day established to raise public awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Awareness of the disease has increased and so too have Alzheimer’s-related research and services.
The Alzheimer’s Association is dedicated to finding prevention methods, treatments, and eventually a cure for the disease. They provide information to individuals and their families who are affected by dementia as well as to health care providers and public officials who can influence policy changes. To contact the Alzheimer’s Association, you can phone 499-0691 or visit their website at www.alzmass.org. Elder Services provides support and services to seniors and their families who are dealing with issues related to Alzheimer’s and other dementias. These services include: Meals on Wheels, help with bathing and dressing, respite time for the caregiver, Supportive Housing options, case management, Information and Referral, and health insurance counseling. Elder Services Family Caregiver Support Program provides one-on-one in-home support to caregivers as well as regularly scheduled support groups. Elder Services’ Richard and Rita Gallagher Alzheimer’s Resource Library located at 66 Wendell Avenue in Pittsfield, is a lending library open to anyone in the community looking for information on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias as well as resources and methods for stress reduction and time management for caregivers.
