Greylock golf tournament benefits Meals on Wheels
Elder Services’ Meals on Wheels program received proceeds in the amount of $20,000 at the Greylock Federal Credit Union’s 25th annual Bees Prendergast Memorial Golf Tournament held on Monday, August 11th at the Country Club of Pittsfield.
The tournament is held annually and is dedicated to the memory of Robert “Bees” Prendergast, a long-time Greylock board member and community activist who passed away in 1999.
Meals on Wheels, a federal and state funded program, deliver hot, nutritious noontime meals to over 750 homebound elders each weekday. Federal funding for the program remains stable, but state revenues have dropped, while costs for food, preparation, packaging and delivery have continued to climb. Many Meals on Wheels programs nationally have had to institute waiting lists for this essential service; community support through donations and special events like the Greylock golf tournament will help Elder Services avoid this in the Berkshires.
The tournament’s success was achieved through a variety of contributions from individuals and organizations across the Berkshires. The Haddad Pontiac Toyota Buick Jeep dealership offered a 2003 Buick Regal as the Hole in One contest prize. Greens, tees and carts were sponsored by Berkshire businesses, and raffle prizes were donated by area merchants. Also contributing to the success of the tournament were staff and volunteers from Greylock Federal Credit Union and Elder Services, and the tournament’s participants. Elder Services Tournament Committee members included Executive Director Robert P. Dean, staff members Roger Suters, Stephanie Talanian, and Louisa Weeden and Golf Committee members Ed Perlak, Timothy Carlo, Alex Seseske, and Stephen Long.
