Retiring the Champ,” one-woman performance at Berkshire Museum

“Retiring the Champ,” written and performed by Judith Black, is an inspiring and humorous program illustrating the journey of Alzheimer’s disease. The one-woman show will be performed on October 27 at 3 p.m. at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, and a reception will follow.

This journey explores many threads: the medical and elder care system; the social aspect impacting family relationships; and the spiritual one that transforms a son from angry boy to soulful adult.

This story concerns Trina, the eldest child of immigrants, a teacher and union organizer in the New York City Schools, and a fierce and valuable ally.  At 83 with Alzheimer’s, she is still a fighter, but she is forgetting which direction her opponents are coming from.  When son Michael, who always referred to Trina as “the little pit bull,” discovers he is the only one who can guide her through the maze of Alzheimer’s and into preparation for death, he is terrified, , but he learns that the process  can be as rewarding as it is challenging.

Judith Black is a nationally-acclaimed storyteller.  For 20 years she has been part of the Lesley University’s Art Institute faculty where she has taught the art of storytelling throughout the United States.
