It’s storming! Will my meal be delivered?
By Roger Suters
Elder Services Nutrition Program staff is very concerned about the welfare of all who receive home-delivered meals. Our goal is to “get the meals out” every day and throughout the year this goal is accomplished dependably. However, during the winter the Berkshires can present extreme weather conditions – snow, sleet, ice, and bitterly cold wind chill – with the result that Meals on Wheels might not be delivered.
When Meals on Wheels are cancelled, the following will happen:
Local radio stations are notified of meal delivery cancellations by 6:30 a.m. and on-air announcements are made. Listen to one of these stations in your area for information. WBEC – 1420 AM and 95.9 FM; WUPE – 1110 AM and 100.1 FM; WBRK – 1340 AM ands 101.7 FM; WNAW – 1230 AM; and, WSBS – 860 AM.
The Meals on Wheels drivers will call their clients to determine each individual’s status. If there is cause for concern, Elder Services and the appropriate community emergency response team will be notified.
Each October Meals on Wheels clients who are considered in need – perhaps living in a rural area – will receive three shelf-stable meals that require no cooking. These meals can be used in an emergency, and will be replaced as needed throughout the season.
Elder Services is committed to meeting the needs of all those who receive our services. If you are concerned about the delivery of meals to yourself, a family member, or a friend, call us at 499-0524 or (800) 544-5242.
