Berkshire Senior TV —16 years of broadcasting

By Roger Suters

In 1991, Elder Services of Berkshire County began to utilize the facilities of local community cable access television stations as way to disseminate information of special interest and importance to seniors and their families. Since the 2006-2007 began in September 15 Berkshire Senior TV shows have been produced and broadcast on Berkshire County’s four community access television stations). Two shows are scheduled for production this month, including the live recording of Elder Services 'Legislative Forum – featuring the entire Berkshire County delegation.

On the first Monday of each month the Berkshire Senior TV production crew gathers at the Pittsfield Community Television (PCTV) studio on Federico Drive. Access Pittsfield (Channel 16) Coordinator, Norm Shaffer, provides technical support to the Elder Services production team. This past season the professional, dedicated, and friendly support of volunteers has been critical to the success of this enterprise. Special thanks this year go to volunteers Everett “Red” Fletcher, Jerry Gardner, Joe Gerard, Bob Hamel, Marty Jonas, and Jeff Turner.

Each show is recorded in digital format on DVD. Copies are made and distributed to Northern Berkshire Community Television, Community Television for the Southern Berkshires, and WilliNet, and each station provides scheduled viewings for the communities served. Individuals or organizations interested in information about past shows, and borrowing tapes or DVDs from the archives, are invited to contact Elder Services through the Information and Referral Department — 499-0524 or toll free (800) 544-5242.

Roger Suters is the Director of Community Services and oversees Elder Services’ Area Agency on Aging functions.
