Elder Services honors volunteers

On April 20th Elder Services hosted a Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Crowne Plaza.  This annual event is an opportunity to honor over 400 volunteers who help Berkshire County elders on a daily basis. Volunteers transport people to and from medical appointments and grocery shop.  They are companions and financial managers.  Volunteers help prepare, package and deliver hot meals.  Ombudsmen visit and advocate for nursing home residents.  SHINE Counselors provide unbiased health insurance information.  Berkshire Senior TV volunteers help produce informative programs for Public Access Television, and each month Berkshire Senior newspaper volunteers assist in preparing 10,000 copies for distribution throughout Berkshire County.

The evening began with the talented Vivian Rodowicz at the piano during cocktail hour, followed by the magnificent voice of Bill Kudlate singing the National Anthem.  William Dudley, President of the Board of Directors, announced the “Volunteers of the Year”. Executive Director, Bob Dean, presented the awards to individuals from five volunteer programs.  Dolores Faivre, Nutrition; Mary Jane Methe, Ombudsman; Margaret Rancatti, Money Management; Joan Ury, S.H.I.N.E.; Margaret Walker, Community Services. A special award was presented to Emma Miller in recognition of her dedication and commitment.

After dinner, volunteers and guests danced to the marvelous sound of The Eagles Stage Band.  The 16-piece band volunteered their talents and time accenting a very enjoyable evening.

The theme for this year’s event, “Volunteers Plant the Seeds of Kindness”, expressed the altruism demonstrated by over 400 volunteers serving over 3,000 elders every month of the year
