Elder Services held its Annual Meeting and 30th Anniversary celebration on October 27 at the Wahconah Country Club. Out-going President Barbara I. Kie opened the meeting and recognized the dedication of the 2003-04 board of directors. Two departing members, Karen P. Reilly and Barbara I. Kie, both former Elder Services board presidents, were appreciated for their board service. Christopher King of Lenox and Mary Ellen Ausman of Pittsfield were elected to serve two-year board terms.
Executive Director Robert P. Dean acknowledged citations received in honor of Elder Services’ 30th Anniversary from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, the United States Congress, the Massachusetts House of Representatives, the Massachusetts State Senate, and Governor Romney.
Dean presented former Elder Services Executive Director Catherine R. May with a commemorative hammer signifying her crucial role in providing impetus and direction to a HUD-funded project currently renovating the former Lee Central School into 38 units of affordable service-enriched elder housing.
Elder Services founder Frederick Whitham was recognized for his contribution in the formative years of Elder Services, providing the agency with a firm foundation based on a commitment to excellence, continual organizational development, and respect for the individual.
Dean noted in his annual report that, “If there has been one constant from 1974 to 2004, it has been the quality, character and commitment of our board, staff, and volunteers. They have made Elder Services what we are today and what we will be tomorrow. As we celebrate 30 years of service and excellence, we celebrate these individuals and their invaluable contributions.”
Keynote speaker, State Senator Andrea F. Nuciforo, Jr., addressed the topic, “Continuing Dedication to Elders: the Future of Home Care,” praising Elder Services and all in the Berkshire elder network for their commitment and dedication to the county’s older residents.
