By Robert P. Dean, Executive Director
On July 4th, we celebrate that most wonderful of all uniquely American holidays, Independence Day. Unfortunately for some elders, maintaining their independence may be a daily struggle against a variety of challenges. For these elders, many activities once taken for granted have now become obstacles to independent living. Such activities may include driving, managing a checkbook, cooking, cleaning, keeping track of various medications, or even walking to the bathroom. Each of these activities represents a piece of the puzzle.... their puzzle... that has fallen out. Typically, an individual is able to compensate after losing one or two pieces, perhaps by turning up the volume on the television or by only driving during daylight hours, and is able to maintain his or her independence. However, there may come a time when too many pieces have fallen out, and when independence may be lost unless assistance is forthcoming. The point at which outside support is both needed and accepted varies from elder to elder and from caregiver to caregiver. We at Elder Services understand this, and are ready to help, when help is ready to be received. Our goal is to serve any elder who has a need, regardless of income and to provide elders with the opportunity to live with dignity, independence, and self-determination. Among the many services we provide are case management, assistance with housecleaning, bathing and dressing, grocery shopping, money management, transportation to medical appointments, Meals on Wheels, and assistance with health insurance concerns. We maintain an extensive data base of programs and services available for elders here in Berkshire County, and nationwide. Over the past thirty years, Elder Services has evolved and adapted to changing service needs and funding challenges. Today, elders and their caregivers have a greater menu of services from which to choose, and more control over the manner in which their services will be provided. As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary and a proud tradition of service to elders, we will continue to meet the needs of Berkshire elders even as those needs continue to change.
As the nation celebrates its independence this Fourth of July, we at Elder Services salute the elders of Berkshire County, and wish each of you a Happy Independence Day... today and everyday. And, if someday, you have a concern for yourself or a loved one, give us a call. We’re here to help.
And speaking of help, a special thank you to our friends in the community, who support Elder Services financially so that we can continue to support Berkshire elders to live independently.
