July 10 - House has not yet taken up Home Care overrides

As of July 10 at 10 a.m., the House had not yet taken up overrides of the Governor’s cuts to the Home Care program and the Councils on Aging. The following letter was faxed and e-mailed to Representatives Larkin, Pignatelli, Kelly and Bosley this morning.

July 10, 2003

Dear Representative:

We at Elder Services are very concerned about the Governor's cuts to the Home Care Program and to the Councils on Aging.

We are hopeful that the House will override the Governor's vetoes to line items 9110-1630, 9110-1633 and 9110-9002. We ask you to support an override of these vetoes, and that you ask Speaker Finneran to do the same.

As a result of the Governor's $3.4 million cuts to 9110-1630 (Purchased Services) and 9110-1633 (Case Management Administration) an estimated 850 of the Commonwealth's most vulnerable elders will be denied the in-home services upon which they depend in order to remain in their own homes, where they want to be.

The Governor's $590,000 cut to the Councils on Aging (line item 9110-9002) will deny elders the community and socialization supports upon which they depend.

Please see attached press release of July 9, 2003.

Please support an override of the Governor's vetoes of line items 9110-1630, 9110-1633, and 9110-9002.

Thank you for all you do for the elders of Berkshire County.

Sincerely,

Robert P. Dean

Executive Director
