Elder Services’ Response to State Budget Cuts

Note: The following e-mail was sent to Representatives Larkin, Kelly, Pignatelli and Bosley on June 30, 2003:

Dear Representative ___________________:

Elder Services of Berkshire County is very concerned about the Governor’s cuts to the Home Care program and to the Councils on Aging.

We request that you ask the Speaker to put line items 9110-1630, 9110-1633, and 9110-9002 on the Override List to prevent the Governor from cutting the Home Care program and the Councils on Aging.

The Governor’s $2.416 million cut to line item 9110-1630, which provides in-home services to elders, by purchasing in-home services; and the $999,827 cut to line item 9110-1633, which covers the Case Management and Administrative costs of providing this home care, would deny 875 elders the in-home care they need for the year ahead.

The Governor’s $590,000 cut to the Councils on Aging (line item 9110-9002), will deny elders the community and socialization supports upon which they depend.

Please let the Speaker know that we need to override these cutbacks to elder programs and services.

Thank you,

Robert P. Dean
Executive Director
Elder Services of Berkshire County
