Heat Wave Safety for Older Adults
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids like water and clear juices, avoiding alcohol and caffeine which can cause dehydration.
- Stay Cool: Seek air-conditioned environments as much as possible, including visiting malls, libraries, or community cooling centers. Taking cool showers or baths is also helpful.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing to reflect heat.
- Limit Outdoor Activity: Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. If you must be outside, schedule activities for the early morning or evening.
- Check on others: Regularly check on elderly neighbors, friends, and family, especially those without air conditioning or who live alone.
- Be Aware of Medications: Certain medications can increase sensitivity to heat. Consult your doctor about potential effects and how to manage them.
- Know the Signs of Heat Illness: Familiarize yourself with the signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, and know when to seek medical help.
